How to integrate Vipps payments on your website
Vipps is one of the most used payment methods in Norway. Here is a simple walkthrough of how a Vipps integration works technically.
For many Norwegian customers, Vipps is the preferred way to pay. A good integration means fewer abandoned checkouts and faster payment.
The Vipps ePayment API flow
- The website fetches an access token using the keys from the Vipps portal.
- The website creates a payment with an amount and a unique reference.
- The customer is sent to Vipps and approves the payment in the app.
- The customer returns, and the website checks the status with Vipps.
- When the payment is AUTHORIZED, the amount is captured – typically when the goods are shipped or the service is delivered.
Things to keep in mind
- Webhooks: Do not rely only on the customer returning to the website. Use webhooks or status polling so the order is updated regardless.
- Idempotency: Use an Idempotency-Key so a retry never causes a double payment.
- Amounts in øre: Vipps uses the smallest currency unit, so NOK 249.00 is sent as 24900.
- Test first: Use the test environment before going live.
In our solutions Vipps is connected directly to orders, invoices and projects, so everything updates automatically once the customer has paid. Get in touch if you want Vipps on your website.
